On this date in 1962, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital opened its doors in Memphis, Tennessee, founded in large part by the efforts of 50's TV star Danny Thomas.
When he was first starting out, Thomas was a young entertainer with a baby on the way. Work wasn't easy to come by, and his despair grew.
He turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, and vowed:
"Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine."
Thomas would later use his fame to promote and raise money for the new hospital, which now treats thousands of children annually, and always at no charge.
