A weight has been lifted from Greece’s working donkeys.
The country has banned “overweight” tourists from riding the animals on the island of Santorini after activists raised concerns about spinal injuries.
Tourists often pay to ride donkeys up steep paths from the shore to the main town, but carrying heavier visitors has visibly harmed the animals and drawn sharp criticism from advocacy groups.
Now, anyone wishing to ride a donkey must weigh less than 100 kilograms (220 pounds)—or no more than one-fifth of the animal’s body weight.
