#news Virginia democrats have already introduced 50 new tax laws. After 30 days of taking over they are taxing everything from Gym memberships & dog walking to electric lawn care equipment.#virginiaDirectly after Abigail Spanberger was sworn in as Governor, democrats flooded the legislative docket with more than 50 new tax proposals. This comes despite Spanberger promising to lower costs during her campaign, a promise that critics say she never planned on keeping. #democratsSpanberger won the election on pledges to tackle affordability issues like healthcare, energy, and housing costs. However, The 2026 General Assembly session has seen an avalanche of bills to get more money from taxpayers—at a time when Virginia has a $2.7 billion surplus and a large rainy day fund left by former Republican Governor Glen Youngkin. Tax hikes proposed for middle class Americans in Virginia: 🔹A 4.3% tax on ride shares like Uber and Lyft, plus an additional 1.9% surcharge in Northern Virginia. 🔹Adding sales and use taxes to dog walking, grooming, and other companion animal care services. 🔹New taxes on gym memberships, recreation, fitness, and sports facilities. 🔹Imposition of sales tax on dry cleaning and laundry services. 🔹Taxes on vehicle and engine repairs, as well as general repairs or alterations to tangible personal property. 🔹A new delivery fee taxing retail shipments from companies like Amazon, Uber Eats, FedEx, and UPS, particularly in Northern Virginia. 🔹Extension of sales tax to home repair, maintenance, landscaping, and cleaning services paid directly by homeowners. 🔹An 11% excise tax on firearms and ammunition sales. 🔹Creation of new income tax brackets: 8% on incomes between $600,000 and $1 million, and 10% on incomes over $1 million. 🔹A 3.8% net investment income tax on capital gains, dividends, and rental income for those with adjusted gross income over $500,000, potentially pushing Virginia's top rate on that income to 9.55% or higher when combined with other brackets. 🔹New personal property tax on electric leaf blowers and other electric landscaping equipment. 🔹Taxes on storage facilities and self-storage units. 🔹Sales tax on admissions to concerts, events, and aesthetic planning services. 🔹Extension of sales tax to non-medical personal services, counseling, and travel planning. 🔹A new tax on digital personal property, including downloadable content that users own or access perpetually. 🔹Authorization for additional local sales taxes in all counties and cities.Higher hotel taxes and large employer taxes. 🔹A $500 sales tax on firearm suppressors.Critics warn this is what will happen across the nation if the Democrats win the midterms.
