EVICTION: Mayor Nadia Mohamed of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, who was born in Somalia, is calling for financial assistance and pushing for an eviction moratorium for people in the country illegally who are afraid to leave their homes.
"This is how bad things are getting here in Minnesota.
So here's the thing: like many Minnesotans, my mom does not want to leave her house out of fear of what's gonna happen if she does leave. I can literally glue her passport to her forehead and she still will not go unless I am taking her from point A to point B. She is not going.
And that is so similar to a lot of Minnesotans—whether they're documented or not—who are too afraid to leave their house.
Because they're too afraid, they're not able to go to work—meaning as the first... right? So my mom has the privilege not to worry about that because her kids will take care of her.
And a lot of neighbors do not have that same privilege to be able to do that or to say that. So I'm asking you guys to step up for your neighbors. We should all be asking for an eviction moratorium.
Which puts a stop to eviction legal process. Also look to see if your city means that landlords need 30 days notice before they start the eviction process.
Right? And then last but not least, look to your local organizations that do rental assistance.
And if you live in St. Louis Park, consider donating to them. They do a wonderful job in rental assistance and doing mental health assistance. So please, we got for each other. Thank you."
