16. And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
Matthew 19:16.
This young rich man, believing eternal life might be earned by his actions, seeks guidance from Jesus.
Jesus answered, "If you would enter into eternal life, keep the commandments."
The man asks, "Which ones?"
Jesus answered, "Do not murder, or steal, or lie, honor your parents, and love your neighbor."
The young man replied, "All these I have kept, what do I still lack?"
Jesus answered, "If you would be perfect, sell what you have, give it to the poor, and follow Me, and your treasure will be in heaven."
The man left in great sorrow, because his wealth meant more than serving Jesus.
If we let anything come before Christ, we have not surrendered to Christ.
Salvation is the gift of God, to a heart fully surrendered to Christ, knowing the cost Christ paid to save us from destruction.
Salvation is the gift, eternal life is the reward, for all who put their dependence 100% on Christ the Lord.
Possessions can block spiritual growth. The reward cannot be bought with money or good deeds.
Obedience matters; faith and trust in Christ are essential. Amen.
