23. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, who would take account of his servants. Matthew 18:23. Peter asks Jesus how many times he must forgive his brother. Jesus speaks of the unforgiving servant, who was forgiven an enormous debt, impossible to repay, but the king forgave all, showing great mercy. Yet the servant has someone who owes four months' wages, and has him thrown in prison until it is repaid. The lesson is that God has forgiven our sins; we are unable to repay what Christ has done. We should have a heart ready to forgive and show mercy, as we have received so much. Never limit your forgiveness. What we have received should make us tender in how we deal with others. Refusing to forgive will lead to spiritual consequences. Jesus is teaching that God forgives us without limits; we must forgive in the same way. Forgiveness is a way of life for all who have experienced God's grace. What we receive in return is healing, an end to bitterness, and strength in the community of believers. Amen.
