Promises & Shadows: Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament
Day 26: The Beloved Son Offered to God (Gen. 22:1-14)
➡️ The Shadow
God calls Abraham to offer Isaac, his beloved son. The path up the mountain is heavy with silence. Isaac carries the wood, and Abraham obeys in faith, trusting God even in the dark. When Isaac asks, “Where is the lamb?” Abraham answers with trembling hope: God will provide.
This is a test of faith, but it is also a shadow of something larger. The beloved son is placed on the altar, and the knife is raised. Then, at the last moment, God intervenes. A substitute is provided. The beloved son is spared, and the sacrifice is made through a ram caught in a thicket. The name of the place becomes a sermon: the LORD will provide.
➡️ The Fulfillment
This scene prepares us for the gospel. The Father does not spare His own Son, but gives Him up for us all (Romans 8:32). Isaac is spared, but Jesus is not.
Jesus carries the wood of His cross and becomes the true sacrifice. Where Isaac was bound, Christ is nailed. Where a ram was substituted, Christ becomes the substitute, the Lamb God provides for sinners.
➡️ Why It Matters
The gospel is costly love. God does not ask you to provide the sacrifice. He provides it Himself. In Christ, the knife falls, the wrath is satisfied, and sinners go free. Your assurance rests on God’s provision.
