Many legal immigrant families have become afraid to leave their homes for fear of encountering ICE or other federal officers. That fear has led to community efforts like what Dios Habla Hoy (DHH) Church in south Minneapolis is doing. Volunteers have been packing and delivering groceries and supplies directly to people who are too scared to go out. The church has now delivered thousands of boxes of groceries and registered tens of thousands of families in need, with hundreds or thousands of volunteers helping out. These volunteer efforts, including grocery delivery, food box distribution, and mutual aid networks partnering with other nonprofits and faith groups, are all part of a larger community response to immigrant families’ concerns about going into public spaces while federal enforcement is underway.Interestingly, this is how quickly and well hundreds of thousands of people can organize when they unite under a cause.
