From funding Hamas to why Qatar Opposes the Collapse of Iran’s Regime
Qatar’s resistance to regime change in Iran is driven less by ideology and more by strategic, economic, and security interests.
Qatar shares the world’s largest gas field with Iran. A sudden collapse of the Iranian regime could disrupt cheap production of Iran’s energy and energy markets against Qatar but a free Iran would profit which poses an unimaginable risks to Qatar’s LNG exports, a core pillar of its economy.
Iran’s isolation and sanctions engineered by Russia and China have limited its ability to compete in global gas markets and OPEC. This has allowed countries like Saudi and Qatar to dominate LNG exports whilst Iranians suffer in poverty. A new, Western-aligned Iranian government could rapidly become a direct competitor and threat to these nations.
Qatar benefits diplomatically from acting as a mediator between Iran and the West. Regime collapse would reduce Doha’s geopolitical relevance and leverage in regional negotiations.
