FAA Warns Airlines of Military Disruption to Flights over Central and South America

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has warned airlines that military operations over parts of Central and South America could pose a risk to civilian flights.
The FAA issued Notices to Airmen covering Mexico, Central America, Ecuador, Colombia and portions of airspace over the eastern Pacific.
The warnings began on Friday and will last for 60 days.
Last month, a JetBlue passenger jet was forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision with a US military tanker plane close to Venezuela.
The tanker did not have its transponder activated.
After the intervention in Venezuela, the FAA issued restrictions on flights throughout the Caribbean. Hundreds were cancelled.
Tensions have remained high since the US operation to depose Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro at the beginning of January.
President Trump has threatened further action against Colombia, Cuba and Mexico.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump was asked directly if the US will take military actions against Colombia.
“It sounds good to me,” the President replied.
“Colombia is very sick too, run by a sick man [President Gustavo Petro], who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States. And he’s not going to be doing it very long, let me tell you.”
Trump then warned the US might have “to do something with Mexico,” explaining that the Mexican government is not doing enough to fight the drug cartels.
“Mexico has to get their act together because they’re pouring through Mexico, and we’re going to have to do something,” Trump said.
“We’d love Mexico to do it, they’re capable of doing it but unfortunately, the cartels are very strong in Mexico.”
Trump said he had offered US military assistance to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on multiple occasions, but she was “just not willing” and “a little afraid.”
Trump was asked about Cuba and whether military action would be necessary there. He said he believes the regime will fall on its own.
“They got all of their income from Venezuela, from the Venezuelan oil.
They’re not getting any of it. I think it’s just going to fall.
I don’t think we need any action.”
