The last cigarette commercial on U.S. television was a Virginia Slims ad that aired on January 1, 1971, during The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, just before the federal ban on broadcast cigarette advertising took effect on January 2, 1971. The ad famously featured the tagline, "You've come a long way, baby".
