24. He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.Matthew 9:24. Matthew explains, before this verse, that the girl's father was a ruler. He came and worshipped Jesus. Notice Jesus, being God, received the worship. The ruler then said, "My daughter is dead, but if you lay your hand on her she will live." Jesus entered the ruler's house, seeing people mourning and playing music.Jesus says, "Let me through. The girl is not dead but sleeping." The word says they laughed Him to scorn, meaning, in contempt, disdain, rejection, mocking. The crowd is removed outside. The proof of their lack of sincerity is that they go from mourning to laughter. When the faithless were removed, Jesus took her by the hand, and the girl arose. Death here suffered a small loss, until Christ won total victory over death at the Cross. Some laugh at Jesus's miracles. Some, like this ruler, put their faith in Christ, because they can go no higher; they cannot be forgiven or pardoned without Christ. Christ, the Son of the Living God, is needed by all, but only a few believe. Today, be one that believes; you will not be disappointed. Amen.
