NASA in the early 90’s created a virtual reality system called VIEW ( Virtual Interface environmental workstation. This system consisted of the head set and gloves called Data Gloves. This system was way ahead of its time, you could interact with simulated environments with those gloves by being able to pick stuff up or interact with something in the environment. To go with the DataGloves they also made the Datasuit, this suit would allow you to physically move around a virtual environment. They also had it setup up so they could have a live feed with cameras streaming to this headset and you would be able to view those cameras in VR. Example- They could put multiple cameras on mars and view those cameras as a 360 degree video. I am unsure if they have done that but it the fact they could do it in the 90’s. VPL was one of the main contributors to this headset, when they built the stereoscopic screen they named it “EyePhone”.
