This would be wild to see in more countries. Wales has been talking about holding politicians accountable if they knowingly lie to the public or mislead voters. How would they regulate this though? It seems like a bit of a nightmare. The original proposal would have made deliberate political lying illegal and could have meant losing your job if you were caught doing it as a politician. The goal was to rebuild trust in politics at a time when a lot of people feel burned by deception. For now, the original plan has been watered down and pushed back. Instead of a full ban on lying with automatic removal from office by 2026, the Welsh government is moving more cautiously. They’re tightening the rules, spelling out more clearly what counts as deliberate deception, strengthening investigations into misconduct, and making it easier for voters to trigger recall votes in serious cases. For now, things like criminal charges or automatic disqualification are off the table, mainly because of legal and rights-related complications.
