At just 19 years old and a senior at Parkway High School in Rockford, Ohio, Austin Dennison made national news when he asked his 89-year-old great-grandmother, Delores Dennison—whom he affectionately called “Granny DD”—to be his date for his senior prom. He learned that Delores had never attended a prom in her youth, and wanted to give her that experience decades later. On the night of the dance, Austin made sure the evening was memorable: he gifted Delores a pearl necklace, arranged for the music to include a song her late husband used to sing to her, and helped her get ready to join the celebration. Their arrival at the prom was met with warm applause, and Delores said she enjoyed the gowns, tuxedos, and the overall atmosphere—calling it “wonderful” and noting that everyone “just could not have been more polite.”
