“Uummannaq” means “heart-shaped” in Kalaallisut (the Greenlandic language). Like many place names in Greenland, it gets this name from a physical characteristic of the area. In this case – the heart-shaped mountain that dominates the small island upon which it sits. From the Disko Bay area in central West Greenland to the polar extremes of the far north, the scale of Destination North Greenland is hard to fathom. Along a coastline stretching thousands of miles lie small communities based on the traditional way of living by hunting and fishing. A land also ruled by the polar night in winter and the summer’s midnight sun. Further north, the Uummannaq archipelago and kayaking adventures in Upernavik open up a remote world of experiences culminating at the top of Greenland in the small town of Qaanaaq, where subsistence hunting is still a way of life
