To the decided mirth of the folks assembled, Fredericksburg, Texas, native son Admiral Chester Nimitz dons a REAL cowboy hat at the "Old Texas Roundup" in Honolulu on January 16, 1944. World War II was raging, of course, and the admiral decided that it would be a good moral booster to host a huge barbecue and Texas reunion at Ala Moana Park for anybody in uniform who was from Texas or had Texas ties. An estimated 40 thousand sailors, soldiers, and Marines showed up and were fed Texas-style barbecue and enjoyed music, dancing, and games like horseshoes ---- one of Admiral Nimitz’s favorites.
