20. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
Revelation 18:20.
John has another vision of the destruction of Babylon, warning anyone who follows Christ to leave the city.
There are four themes in chapter 18.
1st Proclaiming the fall of Babylon, symbolic of any city or system that opposes God, full of sin, wealth, pride, deceiving nations with immorality and luxury.
2nd God's warning to leave Babylon and avoid its sins. Babylon is judged quickly and completely, no longer able to prosper.
3rd The merchants and traders lament. They no longer have a place to do business. All wealth—gold, silver, anything of value—has been destroyed. None escape; the place is left empty.
4th Heaven rejoices because God has judged righteously and with justice. Babylon's destruction is the end of oppressive powers that defy God.
In conclusion, God judges sin and pride.
Corrupt power and wealth are temporary.
God protects the faithful from the consequences of evil.
The destruction of evil is sure and complete.
God's rewards are guaranteed.
His judgments are unavoidable. Amen.
