Japan has rejected proposals to build new Muslim cemeteries, sparking significant controversy.
During a meeting, politician Mio Sugita reportedly told Muslim representatives, “If you want to bury people your way, go back to your home country.”
Cremation is the norm for over 99% of funerals in Japan due to limited land, but Islamic law prohibits cremation. Currently, the country has only ten small Muslim cemeteries. Some local residents express concern that burials could contaminate groundwater.
The government has stated it does not plan to change the existing regulations. As a result, Muslim families often face the choice of cremating their deceased relatives or paying to have them buried abroad.
