A Polish woman, 27-year-old Karolina Krzyzak, was found dead alone at the Sumberkima Hill Retreat in Bali in December 2024, according to New York-based online publication The Cut.
Her death came to light after Krzyzak's acquaintance alerted workers at the resort to her disappearance.
Was too weak to walk alone, refused to see doctor
Krzyzak had checked in at 11pm on Dec. 8, 2024, after making a last-minute reservation for a villa equipped with a pool.
She also requested that her meals, consisting solely of fruit, be directly sent to the villa.
According to The Cut, the hotel owner, Bernard Hudepohl, stated that her request was "not unusual," as guests sometimes request vegan meals or even prepare their own juices while on a cleanse.
However, he added that her severely underweight condition, sunken eyes and prominent collarbones "shocked" him and his staff.
Krzyzak was also too weak to walk alone and had the help of the night staff to carry her to her villa.
Hotel staff had asked her twice to consult a doctor, but she declined.
Krzyzak reportedly did not leave her villa for the next two days, except to sit on the veranda.
She eventually grew weaker and was unable to turn over in bed, requiring help from hotel staff to move.
On December 11, her acquaintance became concerned that Krzyzak had not replied to her messages and asked the hotel staff to check on her.
They later found her lying on the floor unconscious, with her skin grey and mottled, and her hair nearly white.
Struggled with body image since teenage years, adopted fruit-only diet
Krzyzak was known for wanting to move to Bali and was especially drawn to a group of raw-vegan influencers known as fruitarians, who ate only fruit.
She had strongly believed in the philosophy of clean eating — that consuming pure foods could purify the mind and spirit, reported The Cut.
The idea is widespread on social media, promoted by influencers who encourage avoiding processed foods and seed oils in favour of a "natural" lifestyle.
Her struggles with body image had begun in her teenage years.
According to The Cut, when she was 15, she wrote on Facebook: "Why do you cry? 'Cause I’m fat."
She switched to veganism after entering the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom (U.K.), and organised events for its vegan club.
She later reached out to a raw-vegan influencer for advice on recovering from anorexia and regaining her menstrual cycle if she only ate fruits.
Krzyzak was advised to fast, detox, "cleanse" herself, and "align to nature and her will".
By her second year of university, she had adopted a fully raw vegan diet consisting of fruits and uncooked vegetables.
Her weight dropped further, alarming her parents, who insisted she withdraw from school and seek treatment.
In 2018, she returned to Warsaw, Poland, for inpatient treatment before eventually returning to her raw-vegan diet.
Weighed only 27kg, refused proper treatment
Krzyzak later travelled to the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa, after some time in Warsaw.
Friends recalled that she seemed relatively content in Tenerife, going out and even adopting a kitten, before it went missing.
Depressed, Krzyzak later flew to Bali in September 2024 and joined the fruitarian community in Ubud.
She suddenly found herself among the very influencers she had admired online for years, attending raw-vegan meetups and fruitarian health talks.
A fruitarian health coach, Graham, whom she followed on Instagram, said that she weighed no more than 60 pounds (27kg) at the time.

Her health then severely declined by November 2024.
Multiple people offered to bring her to an eating-disorder treatment centre or call her parents, but she declined.
Graham later helped her come up with a detailed proposal to help her gain weight while staying on a raw-vegan diet, but did not suggest further treatment despite being worried about her condition.
Those in the fruitarian community denied any link between the diet and disordered eating.
They argued that Krzyzak's death was not the result of eating only fruit, but of eating too little.
Raw-vegan influencer and wellness coach Raw Zaia said, "But this was someone who ate one fruit a day and was really hating herself and just barely getting by. It really has nothing to do with the fact that she was fruitarian."
Her friends, however, continue to wrestle with guilt.
Emilia, a former raw vegan who left the community after developing edema, said she warned Krzyzak that many influencers were not as they seemed online and often struggled with health issues themselves.
But by then, Emilia believed that she was "too deeply invested" in the fantasy.
"Eventually you realise that the body, in its essence, is impure, and that the soul is infinite, and you need the body to be strong if you want to live in this world and be compassionate and help others, I don’t think Karolina ever realised that," she said.
