RFK Jr responds to the idea of "trust the experts" by rightly pointing out that highly trained experts on any side of an issue can say completely opposite things. We are in a time where EXPERTS DISAGREE. We have been pointing this out for years and providing the appropriate question: what do you do when experts disagree? What is not a great approach is to turn things religious and dogmatic, which is like saying, "trust these experts because they are right and have authority." This is like what the Washington Post and the New York Times did when they created an alliance saying "fake news is out there, you need to trust real journalists... oh, and we are the only real journalists you can trust." This is not the way to sensemake controversial issues during paradigm changing moments, this is simply holding onto outdated ways of thinking.Instead, you have to consider moving into a space of uncertainty and turn your curiosity back on. You have to listen to experts on various sides, steelman the issues at hand, and detach from outcomes. We have taught this process through what I call Embodied Sensemaking. It's a process of bringing practiced critical thinking on board as well as noticing how your physiology responds when you might get triggered or activated by conclusions you don't like. This way one can notice WHY they might be be open to changing their mind. Where I disagree is that the U.S. is a democracy; it is not. Democracy is simply a veneer pulled over the reality of an oligarchy.
