President Trump has shifted federal policy back toward gasoline cars by weakening fuel-efficiency rules that were central to Biden’s climate strategy.
The new plan lowers the 2031 requirement for cars and light trucks from 50.4 mpg (miles per gallon) under Biden’s rule to 34.5 mpg (miles per gallon), reducing pressure on automakers to sell electric vehicles.
Trump said the rollback would save Americans $109 billion and cut the cost of a new car by about $1,000.
The move follows earlier removal of EV tax credits and fines, dismantling Biden’s core climate strategy.
The decision signals a broader retreat from clean-energy goals as transportation remains the country’s largest source of emissions.
