2. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:2.
John is giving a legal definition of Christ's work on the Cross.
This word, propitiation, means satisfaction.
God requires a satisfactory payment for sin. The punishment for sin is death, eternal destruction.
To make sure His justice would be satisfied, God placed all the sin of mankind on His only Son, Christ Jesus.
The wrath of God against sin was placed fully on Christ at the Cross, Christ becoming our substitute, paying for sin's debt and punishment.
This is the love of God in action.
The sins of the world have been paid for, but not all receive the salvation of Christ.
There is a change in the redeemed; they turn from sin and seek to please God and walk in His ways.
They also desire to be close to God, and the way is through Christ the Lord.
If you do not have Christ, you will never see the kingdom of God.
All who deny Christ deny the Almighty Father; all who have Christ have the Almighty Father also.
And this is the promise He has promised to believers: eternal life. Amen.
