December 1st 1978 - Barry Sadler, who scored a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 with "The Ballad of the Green Berets", killed a Country music songwriter named Lee Emerson Bellamy. The two were involved with the same woman. Sadler confronted him, Bellamy jumped into his van and Sadler shot him in the head believing he had a gun (Bellamy didn't). In June, 1979 he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter but served just twenty-one days in jail after a successful self-defense appeal. Sadler himself was murdered on Sept 7, 1988 in Guatemala City.
