Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has drawn sharp criticism from both Democrats and Republicans after declining to condemn chants of “death to America” and “death to Israel” that erupted during an anti-Israel rally in her congressional district this week. The incident occurred at an International Al-Quds Day rally in Dearborn, Michigan, on November 22, 2025, according to multiple reports and video footage shared by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). Protesters at the event, which focused on solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, were heard chanting the phrases. One speaker referenced Malcolm X, describing the United States as “one of the rottenest countries that has ever existed on this earth,” while another labeled Israel as “ISIS, Nazis, fascists, [and] racists.” The rally took place in Dearborn, a city with a significant Arab American population within Tlaib’s 12th congressional district.Video of the chants quickly circulated online, prompting widespread condemnation. Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud, a Democrat, denounced the rhetoric on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We reject all inflammatory and violent statements made at the gathering. Dearborn is a city of proud Americans; the hateful rhetoric heard on Friday does not reflect the opinion of the members of this community.” The White House also issued a strong rebuke through spokesperson Andrew Bates, who told The Daily Caller, “The White House condemns these abhorrent and Antisemitic remarks in the strongest terms. As President Biden has said, America is the greatest nation on Earth and a beacon to the world.” When approached by Fox News reporter Hillary Vaughn on Capitol Hill on November 27, 2025, Tlaib refused to directly address the chants. Instead, she accused the network of employing “racist tropes” and being “Islamophobic” in its questioning, suggesting it implied Muslim Americans’ disloyalty to the U.S. “I don’t talk to Fox News,” Tlaib said in the encounter, which was captured on video and widely shared. Her office did not respond to requests for further comment from multiple outlets, including The Algemeiner. The episode has fueled bipartisan backlash. Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI), a pro-Israel group within the Democratic Party, stated, “Chanting ‘Death to America’ incites violence and is patently anti-American. All political leaders should be able to join the White House & Dearborn’s Mayor in denouncing this slogan.” DMFI added, “Congresswoman Tlaib’s refusal to condemn those words is sadly telling,” and questioned, “Does she really want to see America die?”On the Republican side, Sam Markstein, national political director for the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), called Tlaib “a disgrace” who “should not be representing the people of Michigan’s 12th district in Congress.” He accused House Democratic leadership of enabling her “vicious antisemitism and anti-Israel rhetoric for years” and urged them to hold her accountable.Tlaib, the first Palestinian American woman elected to Congress and a vocal critic of Israel’s policies, has faced similar controversies in the past. She has defended phrases like “from the river to the sea” as calls for Palestinian freedom, though critics argue it implies the elimination of Israel. Her stance on the Israel-Hamas war, which began after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack that killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, has drawn repeated scrutiny from both parties.
