A 26-year-old woman is in critical condition after being set on fire aboard a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line train on Monday night. The incident occurred around 9:25 p.m. near the Clark/Lake station in downtown Chicago. Police report that the woman had a verbal altercation with a man, believed to be about 45 years old, during the ride. The situation escalated when the man poured an unknown liquid on her and set her alight.
When the train stopped, the woman was able to exit but collapsed on the platform. Firefighters quickly put out the flames, and emergency responders transported her to the hospital. Authorities have detained a person of interest and are continuing to investigate the incident.
Although such attacks are rare on Chicago's transit system, this one has raised concerns about passenger safety, particularly late at night. As a result, CTA temporarily suspended service in the area while the investigation continues.
One witness recalled seeing the woman in distress, saying, "You could tell she was in really bad shape." The investigation may soon provide more details about the suspect and the motives behind the attack.
