The Story Behind Praise Him Praise Him
Frances Jane Crosby was born in Putnam County, New York, March 24, 1820. She was afflicted with blindness at the age of six weeks from maltreatment of her eyes during a time of illness. When she was eight years old she moved with her parents to Ridgefield, Connecticut, the family remaining there four years. At the age of fifteen, she enrolled the New York Institution for the Blind, where she obtained a great education. She became a teacher at the school in 1847 and resumed her work until March 1858. She taught English grammar, rhetoric and American history. She then started to write Sunday-school hymns for Wm. B. Bradbury in 1864.
She knew a great many portions of the Bible by heart, and had committed to memory the first four books of the Old Testament, and also the four Gospels before she was ten years of age.
Her range of topics was broad, including everything from a pondering of heaven, as in "The Bright Forever" and "The Blessed Homeland", to a consideration to the labor of this world, as in "To the Work" and "Rescue the Perishing."
The Bible indicates that God commands people to praise him, with numerous verses in both the Old and New Testaments giving this instruction. Worship is considered a central responsibility and an act of love and service, with commands including praising and thanking God in all circumstances.
Commanded in Scripture: Many passages, such as Psalm 150:6 ("Let everything that has breath praise the Lord"), directly command praise.
An act of love and service: The command is linked to loving God with all your heart, soul, and strength, as stated in Deuteronomy 6:5.
Part of the Christian life: Both Jesus and the apostles encouraged worship, and the New Testament presents it as a key activity and responsibility.
A two-way street: Praise is seen as something that God deserves, but it is also presented as beneficial for humans, fostering joy and a deeper relationship with God.
