Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. I put these names between the two verses to show they received a good report through their faith, yet they had not seen Christ their Savior, but in word and deed their actions were as good as any Christian. For they were tempted, stoned, sawed in half, slain by the sword, afflicted and tormented. But never turning back on their faith in God, they possessed the promise, as if they held it in their hand. How much more us who have the words of eternal life, the history of God's people and our rescue from destruction at the Cross of Christ. Faith grows when watered with the word of God. So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Amen.
