I never knew about ‘Donut Dollies’. Here’s to them!
~~~~~
Diane Johnson Tucker was a Red Cross "Donut Dollie" in Vietnam in the early 1970's.
As a volunteer in the Supplemental Recreation Activities Overseas program, Diane flew by helicopter to remote bases across Vietnam—stations like Qui Nhon, Camp Eagle near Hue, and Cam Ranh Bay—bringing games, smiles, and a touch of home to the troops.
She and the other Dollies would put on fun programs for the soldiers, visit them in hospitals, and down 6-8 Cokes a day because the guys insisted on sharing what little they had. She even repelled from a helicopter once over Camp Evans, just to boost morale!
"I felt like we needed to support our troops that were being sent to war," she said of her reason for volunteering.
"Over the years I have learned that the world consists of givers and takers. The ladies that I worked with in Vietnam were definitely 'givers'!"
These women risked their lives to remind our soldiers they weren't forgotten. Of the 627 Dollies, 3 died in Vietnam.
God bless the Donut Dollies and the soldiers they supported🇺🇲❤️🙏🏼🪖
