The Republican origin of the teddy bear. November 14th 1902,
Theodore Roosevelt was hunting in Mississippi. Bully for the President,
who refused to shoot a bear cub some overly helpful locals had tied to a
tree.
A newspaper soon published this cartoon: Seeing it, a Brooklyn toy maker obtained permission from him (Roosevelt, that is) for permission to market a stuffed animal named "teddy's bear". And thus a childhood classic was born. It is noteworthy that his childhood nickname was "Teedy".
