18. That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Hebrews 6:18.
The author speaks of two things which are available to us: faith and hope in Christ.
The cities of refuge in Israel were for anyone who had killed someone by accident.
The cities and Jesus are within easy reach. The cities and Jesus are safe. The cities and Jesus will not refuse anyone. The cities and Jesus provide protection only within their boundaries. The cities and Jesus are the only alternative for one in need of safety. They are safe within the cities limits until the death of the High Priest (a symbol of Jesus). There is a crucial distinction between Jesus and the cities of refuge: the cities of refuge were only for the innocent.
The guilty can come to Jesus. Amen.
