Japan will give 250 cherry trees to the United States to celebrate 250 years since America’s founding, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced on Tuesday.
“To celebrate this historic milestone, Japan will present 250 cherry trees to Washington, D.C.,” Takaichi said during a meeting with President Trump at the Akasaka Palace in Tokyo.
She also announced that Japanese fireworks will be displayed in Washington on July 4 next year.
Japan first gifted 2,000 cherry trees to the U.S. during President Taft’s administration.
Those trees, planted around the Tidal Basin near the National Mall, attract thousands of visitors every spring when they bloom.
The new gift was revealed during a working meeting between Trump and Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, who took office last week.
The two leaders also signed agreements on critical minerals and pledged to work together toward what they called a “golden age” of Japan-U.S. relations.
The cherry tree gift is part of America250, the nationwide celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
