16. He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
Isaiah 44:16.
The author describes a man void of understanding and with a deceived heart; he cannot deliver his own soul.
Taking wood out of the forest—cedar, oak, ash, and cypress—these can represent the different idols formed in man's imagination.
He takes the wood and burns it for warmth, bakes bread, and cooks meat.
With what is left, he makes a god and falls down and prays, saying, "Deliver me, my god."
So anything we put before Christ is our idol. It has no power to save, but it has great power to destroy. Yet, we being in darkness, are unable to see the path that leads to eternal death.
Christ is the Light in the darkness, Christ is the way, Christ is healing, Christ is life, and Christ is truth.
No god who starts out as a lie or sin can ever redeem a soul from sin.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand. Amen.
