1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Psalm 51:1 Psalm 51 is a plea for mercy from a heart filled with sin. A soul seeks mercy after first acknowledging the sin was against God, and a confession without excuses. Our sins can never outweigh God's mercy in Christ. "If our sins be in number as the hairs of our head, God's mercies are as the stars of heaven." (Symson) Christ's salvation is complete, needing nothing added; His blood not only washes clean the soul, but completely blots out the punishment, declaring the sinner not guilty. Nowhere can this work be found but in Christ Jesus. With salvation comes a new heart and a new nature provided by God; with the help of the Holy Ghost, each day is a transformation into an image like Christ. This is the new birth, which man in all his strength will never attain without a total submission to Christ, the Son of the Living God. Amen.
