This is the first photo of Earth from space.It was captured on October 24, 1946, when the United States launched a modified German V-2 rocket from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. A 35mm motion picture camera mounted inside the rocket snapped an image every one and a half seconds as the craft ascended more than 65 miles above the Earth’s surface. When the film was recovered, it revealed a grainy view of our planet—the first time humanity had ever seen Earth from space.
