8. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. Ephesians 4:8. Paul is referring to Psalm 68:18, in reference to the resurrection of Christ our Lord. Paul explains that Jesus, who is God and eternal in nature, first had to die as a man and descend to the lower parts of this earth. Christ experienced death for our benefit; He became the sacrifice to cover our iniquities.And rising up in victory, His triumph over Satan, sin, and death, Christ spoiled Satan's plot and released believers from eternal destruction. We were born with free will, which led us to sin. In Christ, we are born again of the Spirit, having the bondage to sin broken by Christ on the Cross. Giving us freely the gifts of the Spirit to qualify men of faith for the ministry. The same Christ that lived on this earth sinless has given you power, through the Spirit, to put sin to death, Romans 8:13. The word mortify meaning, through the Holy Ghost, we can be liberated from the bondage of sin; through the regeneration of our spirit in Christ, sin dies in us and Christ lives for ever in us.
