Would you microchip your hand to ditch keys and cards? In Sweden, thousands of people already have.
In Sweden, technology is literally getting under people’s skin.
More than 4,000 Swedes have opted to implant tiny microchips—about the size of a grain of rice—beneath their skin to streamline everyday tasks.
With a quick wave of the hand, users can unlock doors, check into the gym, access rail tickets, or even share LinkedIn profiles at networking events. The chips, developed primarily by Biohax International, are passive RFID devices requiring no internal power source, making them both durable and discreet.
This growing "body hacking" trend is fueled by Sweden’s tech-forward culture and its shift toward a cashless, digital society. With widespread trust in institutions and a pragmatic attitude toward innovation, Swedes are embracing these implants as convenient tools rather than privacy threats.
But some experts are sounding alarms about long-term data security and health data use. Still, for many early adopters, the appeal of replacing keys, cards, and passwords with a wave of the hand is simply too compelling to ignore.
