Scotland's new "green" ferry, the MV Glen Sannox, has controversially been found to emit 35% more CO₂ equivalent annually than the older diesel vessel it was designed to replace.
This increased climate impact is primarily due to the ferry's larger size and greater energy needs, combined with the environmental pitfalls of its liquified natural gas (LNG) fuel source, which includes potent methane leaks ("methane slip") and significant supply-chain emissions.
Although the new ferry has improved local air quality by cutting sulfur and nitrogen oxides, its overall carbon footprint is worse, underscoring that truly sustainable solutions, like the battery-electric or hydrogen-powered ferries used elsewhere in Europe, are needed to genuinely reduce shipping's climate impact.

They should make an electric ferry that's powered by a coal-fired power plant on land somewhere.
