🦠Pensacola Mom Warns of Flesh Eating BacteriaGenevieve Gallagher contracted Vibrio vulnificus, the flesh eating bacteria that nearly took her life and her leg, after swimming in the Santa Rosa Sound on Pensacola Beach.According to a WEAR Channel 3 article, Gallagher said, “I was intubated for about six days and finally woke up and saw that I had a leg that didn’t even look like my own leg anymore.” She also described the agony, saying, “It feels like somebody took gasoline, poured it on my leg, and lit my leg on fire.”According to the article, she said she had never even heard of Vibrio before. “There needs to be signs out there stating there is flesh eating bacteria… or testing done during the summertime saying levels are high, levels are low, whatever.”Vibrio vulnificus is a dangerous bacteria found in warm coastal and brackish waters. It can enter through cuts or scrapes and cause life threatening wound infections. It can also cause serious illness if raw shellfish such as oysters are eaten. Florida has reported 23 cases and 5 deaths so far this year.Her family has since launched a GoFundMe to help cover her medical expenses.
