He Kissed His Baby’s Photo Before Every Jump (USA – 101st Airborne, 1944)
Sergeant Michael Donnelly carried a photo of his newborn son tucked into his helmet strap. Every time he jumped—Normandy, Holland, Bastogne—he kissed it first.
He was killed in action in January 1945. His fellow paratroopers returned the photo, folded with care, to his wife. On the back, he’d written, “Every time I fly, I land in you.”
