12. What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?13. I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD. Psalm 116:12-13. The psalmist speaks of the Lord's character as gracious, righteous, and merciful, in chapter 116:5. Prophetically, he proves this in verses 12 and 13. The psalmist, with wisdom understood that he received from the Lord because he was grateful. He looked for a way to return the Lord's goodness. Seeing the cup of salvation in the future, he knew that if he were to be close to the Lord he must receive the salvation promised. The night Jesus was betrayed, He took the bread and cup, and said Take, eat and drink in remembrance of Me. The Lord's supper in the New Testament. That night in the garden, the Lord drank the cup of sorrows given to Him by the Father. Filled with bitterness, sorrow, and the curse of death. Jesus drank every drop. Having emptied it, He filled the cup with life, blessings, joy unspeakable, and a sweet restored relationship with the Almighty. Jesus paid what we owed for sin. Giving us the grace and mercy, we did not deserve, eternal life. Amen.
