7. And the word of God increased, and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
8. And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
Acts 6:7-8.
The disciples, being obedient to Jesus, preached the Gospel, and people and a great number of priests, became obedient to the faith.
This is the key phrase of all that is in the Bible, obedience to the word of God.
Stephen is chosen to help the converted widows. Full of faith and power, many miracles were done among the people.
And the enemies of Christ came to dispute with Stephen, but could not resist the wisdom, nor the power of the Holy Ghost. As they hated Christ, they hated Stephen and made up lies against him. Stephen taught that Jesus was greater than Moses, that Jesus was God, that Jesus was greater than the temple, that Jesus was the fulfillment of the law, and that Jesus was greater than all their religious customs and traditions.
For this, they hired men to accuse him of blasphemy, and they stoned him.
Without fear or terror, and in perfect peace with God's plan, Stephen faced death at the hands of an angry mob, with the face of an angel. This is the character of a believer in Christ. Amen.
