5. Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.
6. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
7. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
Psalm 75:5-7.
The psalmist Asaph seeks to teach the stubborn and proud. Verse 5 is a picture of livestock, like untamed oxen who would not bow their head to receive the yoke of the plow, lifting up their horns.
Promotion the desire of self-advancement will never succeed unless we bow and receive the yoke of Christ. Success is the work of God. Yet in private lives, or business, or rulers of nations, those who resist God, will at the end fail. All things serve God's purpose, those who rise, and those who fall.
Jesus asked His disciples what profit is there to have everything in the world, and at the end lose your eternal soul. And what does a man have after death, that he could exchange it for his condemned soul? Matthew 16:26 paraphrased. Amen.
