I would appreciate prayers today please, for several things.
39 years ago today my Dad passed away.
: June 11, 1986 I remember the day well. I was working at the radio station. My dad had a broadcast from 1:30- 2:00 He did his program from home. I listened as he preached, and I signed him off the radio to bring on another program. It wasn’t 10 minutes later that I received a phone call after he did his radio broadcast. Of course he preached strong he went outside and started to do something in the yard and fell over dead, with a massive heart attack.
In those days it took an ambulance well over 30 minutes to get to the house by the time I got almost to the house I saw the ambulance and followed it to the hospital. He was pronounced dead immediately at the age of 68.
My dad was a hard worker. I’m posting a picture when he was 5 or 6 years old. He sat at the entrance to the coal mines and picked up scrap coal, being loaned out as a daily slave, so the family could have money. His mother had died when he was two or three years old. He also worked in the coal mines for a dollar a day for sometime before we moved from Harlan county to Ohio.
We lived in a single room train car. I’m posting a picture of that. 6 children and Mom and Dad in a train car off stop 8 road down by the river In Dayton Ohio. (I’m standing in front of my Mom with what looks like could be overalls.. holding a porky pig toy.
By this time my Dad was working in construction in those days you did not have a specialty you did everything that was needed to be done from beginning the house to finishing the house. Probably his best work was brick and block laying. My Dad took great pride in his work.
My Dad also became a preacher, no schooling, no college, he couldn’t even read or write his name. At first, he had the Bible on record albums later, he moved to the Bible on Cassette. He listened to them practically every day. When he was going to preach, he would listen to whatever chapter, or chapters he was going to preach from. And would have one of us children read those same chapters, and verses on the way to church that night. When the anointing hit him, he could practically quote verbatim everything that he had listened to or heard.
Dad left us way too soon I was 31 years old and I had an old faded Green Plymouth Duster. We had a funeral service in Miamisburg Ohio then took his body to Harlan and had an all night wake and service the next day. I remember the long, lonely, drive there and after the service the lonely rode back to Ohio knowing I would never see my Dad again. I also remember not having the money to get a motel to stay in because everyone that we knew was pretty poor in those days.
We actually parked sideways at one end of a car wash in Harlan someone stood at the other end as we took showers in the car wash and then dry over and put our clothes on to go to the funeral..
Memories is all I have left. May I urge you if your parent, or parents are living enjoy them know. Someday all you will have is memories. My Sister Armeda also died June 14, 1996 so this week is not the best week of my life.
