2. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Psalm 51:2-3. The psalmist has confessed and requested forgiveness. Have mercy upon me, O God, is the prayer of a man who knows he sinned, and self can no longer justify his actions, his sin was against God, and only God could forgive. This forgiveness from God comes with a transformation, a cleansing process that removes punishment and guilt. You may take a hog from the mire and wash it ever so clean. But you have not changed the nature of the hog, so it will return to the filth of the mire. 2 Peter 2:22. The psalmist mentioned, transgressions, iniquity, and sin. These are defined as, sin is missing the mark, falling short of what is expected, iniquity is perversion, mentally or emotionally disturbed, transgression is crossing a forbidden boundary. When the psalmist asks for God to blot these offenses, he asks God to cover the recorded sins in the book of remembrance with the blood of Christ. Thus, where there is no remembrance, there is no debt. This is only possible through Jesus Christ who paid the debt on the Cross. Amen.
