THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL TURNS HEADS Cartoon published 05/27/2025 Rep. Thomas Massie and another House Republican, Warren Davidson of Ohio, were the only two Republicans to vote against ‘The Big Beautiful Bill,’ which promises to cut spending in the future, but not right now. The Bill passed the House, but only by a razor thin margin. Trump is urging that the two rogue Republicans be ‘primaried’ as punishment. In other words, he will rally money and voices from the party to defeat them in the next election. The Big Beautiful Bill,” also includes funding for Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense shield. $25 billion is allocated for the project with more to come down the road. This is nothing compared to the $100 billion Biden wasted on the war in Ukraine, but it will add up. Currently Social Security and Medicare make up 25 percent of the US budget, with the US military accounting for about 15 percent. These are all sacred cows and difficult to trip, but the $872 billion spent on Medicaid (nine percent of the budget) will be—no more Medicaid and Social Security for illegal aliens, for example. Stephen Miller, Trump’s political advisor, says the Bill saves more than $1.6 trillion in mandatory spending and it includes the largest-ever welfare reform. This is a remarkable achievement considering the spendthrift bills the Democrats passed while in power, but overall it’s still not a balanced budget. The Bill will end taxes on tips and taxes on overtime, but it does not end taxes on Social Security—another Trump promise that needs to come to fruition. Trump’s 2017 tax cuts will also be codified into law, but there are not enough spending cuts and the Bill will add to the national debt. Massie and Davidson are concerned about the burgeoning debt the nation owes, but they shouldn’t be. That debt cannot be paid back. The system is broken and voting ‘no’ on the Big, Beautiful Bill won’t save it. Meanwhile Congress is enjoying still yet another week of vacation. Will the Senate pass the bill?
