The Bible Study – Our texts for Monday, May 19 are Leviticus 20:1-27 & Luke 12:1-12. The passage from Leviticus is from yesterday’s daily reading that we skipped for the Sunday lectionary. There is instruction here, however, that we should not miss. In our Old Testament verses we read of God’s punishment for the sacrifice of children to demons. Today, abortion, a satanic sacrifice, is driven by selfishness, greed and denial of God’s Word. It is the Holocaust of our times. Over one million children die in abortion each year in North America. Approximately 100,000 unborn children in Canada are killed every year. Note the connections God is making in this chapter of Leviticus. The punishment for child sacrifice is followed by the penalty for occult, satanic practices: “If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.” (verse 6) Note also the commands against sexual immorality, including verse 13. Read the final verse of Chapter 20 of Leviticus to see God’s wrath against the occult. God’s opposition to satanic behaviour is clear; there is no ambiguity. All human beings, however, are sinners. We suffer from an inherited, spiritual disease from our first parents who fell away from God’s Word in Eden. God’s grace and mercy in Christ comes to us today. We are to beware of the “leaven of the Pharisees,” of those who teach we’re saved by ‘good works,’ or personal ‘holiness.’ The Bible is clear, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) Our heavenly Father loved us so much He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life and not be eternally separated from Him.
