"The Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun is located at 8,136 feet (2,480 m) in elevation. It is about 1,500 feet (460 m) in elevation above Colorado Springs, and is also above the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on the side of Cheyenne Mountain."
And that was easy to do in the 1930s.
"The fort is a massive and visually stunning square structure built of clay bricks. The walls have a length of 1500 meters and stand up to thirty meters high. There are forty circular bastions, ten on each side, which stand 30 m high, visible across the desert for many miles."
