1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according
to thy lovingkindness: according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
Psalm 51:1-2.
The psalmist gives a lesson. If you seek forgiveness it starts with a confession.
Sin has the idea of falling short or missing the mark. Iniquity is the idea of twistedness or perversion. Transgressions is the idea of crossing a boundary.
All sin is against God, and only God can forgive.
If our sins are in number as the hairs of our head, God's mercies are as the stars of heaven. (Spurgeon)
The psalmist asks God to blot out his sin. The meaning is, in the Book of Debt, the record of sin is covered in Christ's blood, unable to be seen.
It is complete needing nothing else.
This is Christ's love, shown in action. Now all who take advantage may have their sin, wiped out of remembrance. And where there is no remembrance there is no judgment. Amen.
