42. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I stay unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Luke 23:42-43.
Matthew and Mark in their Gospels, recorded both criminals crucified with Christ as mocking Him.
Yet one in the hours spent with Christ finds faith. And asks Christ to remember him.
The criminal did not say a prayer or get baptized, nor take the Lord's supper. He did repent.
He called out to Jesus, he knew he was a sinner. He confesses Jesus as Lord. He had reverence towards Christ. He believed who Jesus said He was. He also believed in Christ's promise of everlasting life.
Jesus answered the man far beyond his expectation.
Jesus says, today, not a distant time in the future, but today. You will be with Me. In Paradise.
This word in the Persian language meaning, garden or park. In Genesis 2, it represents the Garden of Eden. To the criminal, it proclaimed a blessed place promised to him after his death.
These last words of Christ must have been extremely painful and difficult, seeing speech comes from exhalation and Christ's time was very close.
This is love in action not just words. We must act likewise. Amen.
